My aunt told me to stop using floral foam for centerpieces

She said it's bad for the environment and that chicken wire works just as well, but I thought it would be too hard. I tried it for a wedding last month in Sacramento, and it was a mess at first. The stems kept slipping, and I almost missed the setup time. After three tries, I got the hang of it and the arrangements looked amazing. Has anyone else made the switch and have tips for keeping things secure?

Honestly your aunt is onto something. That floral foam is nasty stuff and it just crumbles into microplastics. The chicken wire trick is a pain to learn but once you get it, it's way better. I found using smaller pieces of wire and really twisting them tight helps lock the stems in place. It's worth the switch for sure.

Yeah, the "pain to learn" part is right. My first try looked like a metal porcupine that had swallowed a bouquet. Took me three tries before the stems stopped falling out the bottom. Totally worth it though, that foam dust gets everywhere and you're right about the plastic.

Have you thought about trying a moss base instead? It holds stems well and actually helps the flowers last longer by keeping them hydrated. It's a bit more natural looking than wire too.
