Found my grandma's old quilling kit and tried to make a simple flower, but my fingers just can't get the paper strips to cooperate like she could.

She used to sit at her kitchen table in Toledo for hours with just a toothpick and glue, but I gave up after 30 minutes and watched a YouTube tutorial instead.

Oh man, I feel that. Try rolling the strips on the side of a pencil first, not a toothpick. It gives you a bigger, looser coil to start with, and it's way easier to pinch into shapes. That was my game changer.

Hold up, a toothpick and glue? In Toledo? My grandma used the same setup in Akron. That's wild.

Totally get the toothpick thing, but honestly a pencil is too big for me. Found these tiny little dowels at the craft store, like the size of a coffee stirrer. That was the sweet spot, gave me way more control over the tightness of the coil without it being impossible to slide off. Made all the difference for doing the really small, detailed petals.
