Found my grandpa's old wood carving tools in the attic last weekend

I was up there looking for holiday decorations and opened a dusty box labeled 'Ed's shop'. Inside were these beautiful, worn chisels and a mallet, plus a half-finished duck decoy. He used to make them for the guys at his fishing lodge up in Michigan. Holding that mallet, I could almost smell his pipe tobacco. Has anyone here tried to pick up a family craft like this from scratch?

Oh man, that hits home. My dad was a watch repair guy, and after he passed I found his old kit. It took me a solid year of messing up tiny gears and springs before I could even clean a basic movement without breaking something. That smell of machine oil just gets me every time. There's something really special about using the same tools, you know?

Sounds like a good way to ruin some wood.

That's a real link to the past, like @kellyjones said.
