My first attempt at hand-carving a wooden spoon ended in splinters and a trip to urgent care

I was out in my garage last winter trying to make a cherry wood spoon for my mom's birthday, and about 30 minutes in my gouge slipped and went right into my thumb. Blood everywhere, had to drive myself to the clinic in Denton with a paper towel wrapped around it. They put in 4 stitches and the doctor told me to maybe try whittling soap instead. Has anyone else had a carving tool go rogue on them?

Oh man, I feel your pain! I did the exact same thing with a chisel last fall.

Paper towel for 20 minutes? You probably could have just rinsed it off and been fine. A lot of people act like every nick is a trip to the ER. Unless you hit an artery, that seems like a major overreaction.

Wait, didn't you almost take the tip of your finger off too? I had to sit there with a paper towel wrapped around it for 20 minutes before the bleeding stopped.
