Stumbled into an old stamp shop in Portland that changed my whole approach

I was walking through downtown Portland last month and saw this tiny shop with a faded sign that said 'Stamp & Coin Exchange.' I went in just out of curiosity and ended up talking to the owner for an hour. He showed me how to properly soak stamps off envelopes without ruining the paper. I had been just peeling them off like a fool for years. Has anyone else found a random old shop that taught them something simple but game changing?

Man I read this article once about this guy who spent years ruining rare stamps by peeling them dry and then he found an old dealer who showed him the same trick. He was flattening them with a hot iron and everything before that, like a total disaster. It's crazy how we rush through stuff when the slow way is actually easier in the long run. That soaking method sounds way more chill and less likely to tear the paper. Makes me wonder what other simple old school tricks I'm missing out on.

Honestly yeah, it's wild how the best stuff comes from slowing down and learning the right way to do something simple. Ngl that's like half of life's little secrets hidden in old shops.

Oh man, that is so true. I learned how to sharpen scissors the old school way from this guy who ran a hardware store for forty years. He showed me that most people ruin their blades by just pressing harder on a grinder, but a few slow passes on a wet stone gives you a way better edge. It's like every old shop has one of those weird secrets that just makes everything easier once you know it.
