Whittling wood splits? Soak it overnight. Fixed my problem.

Just soak it, huh? Like that's the magic fix for every piece of wood that decides to crack on you. I've had chunks turn into soggy mush after a night in water, totally useless for carving. Sometimes the wood just has a mind of its own, no matter what you do. You get all set up, tools sharp, and then it splits like it's got a personal grudge. Pretty sure my last project became kindling thanks to that advice... Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but overnight soaks aren't always the hero move.

Classic case of the wood having a BETTER idea for its purpose, like becoming a sponge instead of a spoon. Soaking it overnight is like inviting water to a party it wasn't supposed to crash. My buddy tried that on a nice block for a duck decoy, and it puffed up like a wet cereal box. Now he's got a family of mush lumps on his workbench. Sometimes the wood just WINS, and you're left with fancy kindling. Guess the only thing you're whittling down then is your patience.
