My $30 waterproof phone pouch was the best trail find ever

I almost didn't buy it at the gear shop near the Pine Creek trailhead, but last week's downpour hit while I was six miles out. My phone stayed bone dry and I got photos of a perfect double rainbow over the canyon (you know, the kind you never get to capture). Who else has a cheap piece of gear that saved a walk from being a total washout?

I always thought those pouches were a total gimmick, like why not just use a ziplock bag. But your story about the double rainbow photo totally changed my mind. I got caught in a storm last month and my phone in a plastic bag still got wrecked from sweat and condensation. Now I'm looking at those cheap pouches completely different, they actually seal properly. Might grab one before my hike this weekend.

My buddy in Colorado learned this the hard way last summer. He had his phone in a ziplock during a river crossing, but the seal failed and water got in through the charging port. Those cheap pouches have the double fold seal and a solid clip, so they actually lock out moisture. You're right, @jamesf41, it's a totally different level of protection. I've taken mine in heavy rain and even dropped it in a puddle, and everything stayed bone dry inside. The plastic bag just can't handle real pressure or sweat building up inside.

My local hardware store sells those pouches for like twelve bucks by the register. It's funny how the simplest, cheapest fix is often the one we overlook until we really need it.
