Picked a gravel path over paved trail today and glad I did

Most people in my town always stick to the paved river trail for their walks. I decided last Saturday to take the old gravel service road through the woods instead. It was about 2 miles longer and I got mud on my shoes, but I found an old stone foundation from the 1800s I never knew existed. Someone had left a handwritten note in a jar on top of it with a date from 1987. The paved trail is fine but you miss all the hidden stuff off the main route. Anyone else prefer the rougher paths over the easy ones?

Respectfully, I gotta say I see it the other way. I don't get the appeal of having to fight through mud and branches when I just want to clear my head after work. Paved trails are there for a reason - they're reliable and you don't have to worry about twisting an ankle on a loose rock. I tried a gravel path once and spent the whole time watching my feet instead of actually enjoying the scenery. Plus my shoes were ruined and I had to buy new ones. I'd rather take the easy route and actually relax than feel like I'm in a survival situation.

Paved trails have their place for sure, and I get not wanting to wreck your shoes. What finally worked for me was starting on the paved paths to build up confidence, then slowly mixing in one short unpaved detour per walk. That way I learned to read the ground without staring at my feet the whole time. I still take the easy route when I'm tired or the weather's bad, but now I don't stress about a little mud either.

Did you catch that podcast about how walking on uneven ground actually makes your brain work differently? Something about the constant micro-decisions keeping you more present instead of zoning out. Seems like that old note in a jar was proof you were paying attention to stuff most people just walk right past.
