I finally lost it with the 'something modern' project requests...

Lately, I've seen more clients sending super vague briefs... like they expect me to just figure it out. Recently, one asked for a logo with just 'something modern' as direction. I put together three concepts, and they hated all of them... we never discussed colors or style. This whole thing of skipping the planning chat is really eating into my time and cash flow.

Yeah, the "something modern" ask is the worst. What finally worked for me was making a simple mood board the first step. I tell clients they have to send me five pictures of logos or styles they like online before I even sketch. It forces them to think and gives me real targets to hit.

Forcing them to think with a mood board can backfire though. Sometimes it just makes them overthink and fixate on random details from the pictures instead of the bigger idea. You can end up boxed in by their weird picks.

Tried that route with the picture thing and it just makes more work. Half the time they send logos from huge brands with custom fonts and million dollar budgets, then get upset when I can't copy it for five hundred bucks. The real problem is clients wanting to skip the actual talk about their business and audience. You can't replace a real conversation with a Pinterest board.
