I finally realized I was charging by the hour for a project that should have been a flat rate. The client's 'quick revision' turned into 12 extra hours of work.

Ugh, that's the worst kind of scope creep. @blair_webb gets it. Honestly, the real problem is clients never see the time it takes to just open the files and remember where you left off. That mental reload should count as billable hours too. Next time, I'd send a heads-up email the second the revision looks bigger than promised, so they can't act surprised later.

Actually, I have to send that heads up email before I even start the work. If I wait until I'm in the files, I've already lost that mental reload time. I put a note in the contract now that says any revision needs a quick check first. It stops the surprise on both ends.
