I bought a fancy coffee maker that collects dust now

Spent over $300 on a machine that promised cafe quality at home. It took up half my counter and needed cleaning every day. After two weeks, I went back to my old drip pot because it's just easier. Anyone else have a kitchen gadget they regret buying?

That "cafe quality at home" promise is such a trap... they never mention the cafe-level cleanup. My fancy blender is in the same boat, just a sad, bulky paperweight now.

Actually, a good drip pot can make coffee just as good as most of those machines. The real difference is the grinder. Fresh beans and a decent burr grinder matter way more than the brewing gadget.

My old Chemex proves Kevin's point about gear not mattering most. I used pre-ground grocery store beans for years and wondered why it tasted thin. Upgrading to a Baratza Encore grinder changed everything, even with the same brewer. The particle size consistency from a burr grinder unlocks flavors you just can't get from a blade. The machine is just hot water, but the grinder decides what that water finds.
