I finally called my grandma to ask about her famous pie crust recipe

She told me the secret was using ice water from a specific glass pitcher she keeps in her fridge door. I tried it with my regular filtered water and the dough was a mess, but when I used water from a mason jar I'd chilled in the freezer, it came together perfectly. I guess the temperature and maybe the minerals in our tap water really do make a difference. Has anyone else had a family recipe hinge on a tiny detail like that?

My gravy needs a specific wooden spoon.

Oh come on, that's totally real! It's not just a story. That wooden spoon has years of gravy flavor soaked into the wood, it's like a secret ingredient. @craig.mila is right that some things are just luck, but tools matter too. A new spoon wouldn't stir the same or hold the heat right. Some kitchen gear just becomes part of the recipe, you know?

Honestly, it might just be luck of the draw that day. Dough can be weirdly sensitive to humidity in the air, or maybe you measured the flour a little differently. The idea that one specific pitcher is magic feels like a family legend thing (you know, like a good luck charm). I use whatever cold water is handy and my crust turns out fine, so maybe it's more about the story than the science.
