I still think about the old guy who ran the hardware store on Maple Street

Man, that hits home. We had a guy like that at the corner store when I was a kid. He knew every single weird bolt size and could fix anything with a piece of string and some hope. Places like that just don't exist anymore, and it makes me feel old to even say that. Guess I'm officially the person who talks about how things used to be.

I read an article about how those old corner stores were basically community hubs, @susan649. Makes you wonder what we lost when they closed.

My grandpa's hardware store in Toledo had a drawer labeled "mystery parts" that saved our bacon more times than I can count. You're right susan649, those places are gone and now I catch myself telling my niece how we used to fix things instead of throwing them out. I'm basically one step away from yelling at kids to get off my lawn. At least we can be the old people together online.
