I was making my morning coffee wrong for months

My friend in Seattle watched me pour the water and said I was using water that was way too hot, which made it taste bitter. Anyone have a good way to check the water temp without a fancy thermometer?

Oh man, my friend once scalded his tongue so bad he couldn't taste anything for a week.

That "couldn't taste anything for a week" is my biggest food fear. I'm with @patricialee on waiting, but my own lack of patience means I've sipped many a lava-hot coffee. I guess some of us just have to learn the hard way.
