My brother told me to just walk over and introduce myself to the new neighbor, and now we're trading garden clippings every spring.

I was nervous about seeming nosy, but he said 'they're probably just as shy,' so I brought over some extra tomatoes from my patch and she ended up being a master gardener from Tucson.

That's a huge gamble though, you could just as easily get a neighbor who hates small talk and now feels obligated to you.
