My porch swing chain snapped right in the middle of a lazy Sunday

Honestly, it was just my luck that the rusty link gave way when I leaned back with my coffee, sending me and the cushion tumbling onto the deck in Cincinnati last weekend. I ended up having to replace both chains with some heavy duty ones from the hardware store after checking the others and finding more weak spots. Has anyone else had a close call with outdoor furniture that seemed fine but wasn't?

How many people actually do a full inspection every single year though? Stuff gets busy, you glance at it and it looks solid. Sometimes a weak spot just hides until it goes.

You said it was "just your luck" but honestly, that sounds like a maintenance thing. Swings and chains need a real look over every season, not just a quick glance. I check mine for rust and give the bolts a tighten when I do my spring clean up. Letting it go until something snaps is asking for trouble, especially with something holding your weight.

My friend's hammock looked fine but the rope was totally sun-rotted... gave her a nasty spill.
