Decoding the phantom drain issue in my smart speaker reviews led me to a sneaky default setting.
Once I disabled the always-listening mode for voice commands, battery life ratings across my test batch improved dramatically.

Watched my friend struggle for weeks with his new smart speaker draining overnight. I mean, he was ready to toss it out the window, idk what was wrong. Finally, he dug into the settings and found that always-listening thing was on by default. Turned it off, and boom, the battery started lasting like three times longer. Maybe it's just me, but these defaults feel kinda sneaky, like they want you to have a bad experience. He's way happier now, and it totally lines up with what you found in your reviews.

Ugh, it's absolutely a pattern. Same thing with phones having location tracking wide open by default, or apps set to auto-download updates on cellular. My tablet used to constantly nag me with game notifications until I manually killed like fifteen "recommended" settings. They're banking on most people never digging that deep, so they get the data or engagement by default. It's less about a bug and more about a design choice that benefits them, not the user.
