My smart plug drama made me rethink home automation gadgets

I got a smart plug to control a lamp in my living room as part of a redecorating push. Setting it up took forever because the app kept losing connection to my wifi. In my experience, these things are sold as easy fixes but end up causing more headaches. Your mileage may vary, but I found myself constantly troubleshooting instead of enjoying the convenience. Take this with a grain of salt, but I think basic timers are still the way to go for simple tasks. Now I just use a regular plug and save the smart stuff for when it actually works without a fuss.

I read a Consumer Reports article last year that said nearly 30% of smart home device returns were due to connectivity problems. My cousin had the same issue with her brand name smart plug, where it would just drop off the network every few days. She swapped it for a basic outlet timer from the hardware store and said it was a relief. Sometimes the old tech just works without needing an app update or a router reboot. It feels like these gadgets create a problem they're supposed to solve.

How is it that smart plugs have more dramatic connection issues than a teenager with bad cell service? Mine acts like it needs a personal day every time the wifi hiccups, leaving me in the dark literally and turning basic troubleshooting into my weird new hobby.

After my smart plug decided to take a permanent vacation from my network, I had to admit defeat. I bought it to feel like Tony Stark, but ended up more like the guy who can't even program his VCR. Now my lamp is back on a dumb timer, and honestly, it's a relief. The smart home dream is great until you're rebooting your router at 2 AM. I keep the plug in a drawer as a reminder of my hubris. Lesson learned, sometimes old school is the way to go.
