Back from the Giant's Causeway, I'm stuck on the rock removal issue
Part of me gets why visitors want a basalt column sample. But removing any bit seems wrong for future visitors. How do you guys see it?

That's a tough one. It feels so natural to want a piece of a place that amazing, like a physical memory. But you're right, if everyone did it there'd be nothing left, and that's pretty messed up. Seems like it's about protecting the experience for everyone who comes after. Wonder if they've tried making those replica souvenirs you can buy instead?

Wait, you're wondering if they make replicas? They should, but I've been to parks where the gift shop junk looks nothing like the real thing. Heard about a family who took a chunk of petrified wood from a national forest and got fined big time. It's wild that in this day and age, we don't have better fake rocks to buy. If the souvenirs were decent, maybe folks wouldn't risk it. Just seems like a no-brainer to me.

Yeah the replica souvenir idea is a solid fix. I nearly pocketed a cool stone at Yellowstone as a kid before my dad pointed out the rules, and I'm glad now. Having a real looking thing to buy stops that itch without messing up the place.
