Found a weird green rock in my backyard that turned out to be slag

I was digging a new flower bed last spring and hit this heavy, glassy green chunk. I got all excited, thinking I'd found some cool mineral deposit (maybe even copper, you know?). Took it to the geology club at the community college, and they told me it was just old iron furnace slag from the 1800s. Kind of a letdown, but it's neat local history now. Anyone else find something they thought was a treasure that turned out to be industrial leftovers?

Still makes a cool garden decoration though, right? Wonder how many people are out there with old slag they think is a meteorite.

Oh man, I feel that. I once spent a whole afternoon convinced I'd found a fossil in a creek bed. It was just a weirdly shaped piece of concrete with some gravel stuck in it. I mean, it's still kind of cool in its own way, like your slag. It has a story, even if it's not the one you hoped for. That little bit of letdown is real though.

But is it really a big deal in the grand scheme of things?
