My neighbor's kid asked me why I keep 'plain' rocks in a jar on my porch
I was cleaning my truck yesterday and he pointed at a jar of river gravel I picked up near Boise. He said, 'They're just gray...' but then I told him each one tells a different story about the water and the land. I showed him one with a tiny quartz vein, and his whole face changed. It made me think about how we look at things without really seeing them. What's a simple rock that surprised you when you looked closer?

Ha, I once tripped over a "plain" rock and found a perfect fossil in it... go figure.
