My new gravel driveway is basically a rock collection

The truck dumped a load of 3/4 inch crushed stone for my driveway in Toledo, and I spent an hour just looking at all the different pieces (some were pink granite, some looked like basalt). It hit me that this boring, practical thing is actually a bunch of local geology I walk on every day. What's the coolest rock you've ever found in plain sight like that?

Check if any of that pink granite has those big, shiny mica flakes in it. I once saw a piece of driveway gravel that looked like a tiny gray layer cake, all different stripes. Did the guy who delivered it say where they quarried the stone from around here?

I used to think all gravel was the same, @lily70, but seeing those mica flakes in the pink stuff totally changed my mind.

Remember finding a piece of driveway gravel with a perfect little fossil in it. It was just a common limestone chip, but that detail made it special. Makes you look at the whole pile differently.
