Spent a whole weekend trying to figure out if my find was a fossil or just a weird rock
I found this thing near a creek in Kentucky that looked like a shell imprint. After checking three different guides and a museum website, it turned out to just be a cool piece of limestone with a concretion. Has anyone else gotten super excited over a rock that wasn't what you thought?

The real fun is in the looking, not the finding. Getting tricked by a cool rock means you were paying close attention to the ground. That focus is how the real discoveries eventually happen.

Honestly, that's how you learn to see the real stuff. I mean, my eyes got way better at spotting actual fossils after I got fooled by a few convincing rocks. It's like your brain needs the practice runs.
