I finally gave up on my old way of marvering after a workshop in Asheville

The instructor there said 'your marver is a brake, not a clutch,' and that simple idea made me stop mashing the glass and start guiding it. Has anyone else had a phrase or tip that completely shifted a basic technique for you?

My pottery teacher in college kept saying 'the clay is already round, you're just reminding it.' I was fighting the wheel for weeks, trying to MAKE a circle, until that clicked. It switched my whole focus from forcing the shape to just following what was already there.

That's such a good way to put it. It makes you realize how much force we use by default, when a lighter touch is usually better.

Yeah but sometimes you need that force, @milacraig. The wheel fights back if you're too soft.
