Serious question, did my latest vase just attempt a solo escape from the annealer because of a temperature hiccup?

Wait, what?! Your vase tried to make a break for it? That's wild. I've heard of thermal stress causing cracks, but a full-on jailbreak from the annealer is next level. How bad was the temperature swing to make it shift like that? You gotta share a picture if it's still in one piece, that sounds like a story.

Did the temperature SWING that violently? I've never heard of glass actually MOVING in the annealer!

During a frost warning in Toledo, our annealer dropped 40 degrees overnight. That caused a heavy vase to shift and crack against the door (a real mess to clean up, honestly). It's rare, but rapid cooling can make glass contract unevenly and actually move, especially with thicker pieces. I've seen it happen when the kiln cools too fast in a drafty room. Always monitor ambient temperature, since even stable settings can be fooled by a cold snap.

Totally agree with you @laura_ward, that jailbreak line is too good. Yeah, glass can actually move in an annealer if the temp drops fast enough... I had a similar scare last winter when my garage door got left cracked open during a freeze. The annealer lost like 30 degrees before I noticed, and a thick bowl I had in there literally slid a good two inches across the shelf. It didn't break, but it was wedged up against another piece, and I had to chip them apart after. So it's a real thing, not just a story. Glad you and your vase are okay though, kaih36, that's a nightmare to clean up.
