Had a customer's .308 bolt lugs shear clean off during a function check

It was a custom build from a local shop, came in for a trigger job. I was cycling dummy rounds through it when the bolt handle just spun free. Pulled it out and two of the three lugs were sheared at the base. The heat treat on the bolt body looked off, almost like it was never done. I had to call the customer and tell him his rifle was now a paperweight. Anyone seen a bolt fail that catastrophically without a round even going off?

Guess that custom shop skipped the "making it strong" part of the build. Shearing lugs on dummy rounds is a new kind of impressive failure. Customer probably paid a premium for that paperweight too.

Man, how do you even mess up that badly with dummy rounds? That's just embarrassing for a shop that calls itself custom. I feel for the guy who bought it, you know? He's out all that money and trust. Susan's totally right about things being built to barely work now, it's like they're hoping it holds together just long enough for the warranty to run out.

It's crazy how many things are built to just barely work these days.
