Just realized my dad's old vise is STILL the best for barrel work.
Modern tools are great, but NOTHING beats the feel of that seasoned steel.

@lindal13, that line about your grandpa's vise never marring a barrel finish really hits home. My dad left me his old vise and it's the same story, never leaves a mark on anything. The metal jaws on these old models have a perfect sort of grip that holds tight without digging in. I've used mine on all sorts of projects and the finish always comes out untouched. It's crazy how much better made some of that old stuff is. You just don't see that kind of care in a lot of new tools.
