PSA: The all-ages indie shows at the rec center got me to listen.
I always skipped the indie nights at the community rec center. I thought it was just for kids or too amateur. Last weekend, my friend dragged me to see a band called Glass Echo. They played a mix of dream pop and shoegaze that was actually really good. The sound system was decent, and the crowd was mixed, from teens to older folks like me. I ended up talking to the bass player after the set, and she said they've been practicing in her garage for months. Now I see that these shows are where new bands cut their teeth. I'm planning to go back next month and maybe even bring some friends.

Feel the exact same way about our local VFW hall shows (always wrote them off as just punk kids yelling). Wound up catching this folk-punk duo there last fall that blew my mind, and it's the same deal, total labor of love in a basement somewhere. Really changes how you see your own town's music, like you found a secret layer. Happy you got dragged out, it's a good kind of shame to have.

That "secret layer" idea really hits home. Does finding those spots change how you move through your town now, like you're always low-key scouting? It seems like that kind of find sticks with you.

My roommate used to skip the open mic nights at the bar, thought it was just bad covers. He caught a synth-wave act there that was actually INCREDIBLE, and now he goes every Tuesday.
