Got asked to pick a lock at a kid's birthday party. Seriously, who does that?

When someone asks you to pick a lock at a kid's party, it's definitely odd. I remember at my friend's barbecue, her toddler locked a bedroom door with the cat inside. I used a paperclip and a bobby pin to get it open. Keep simple tools handy, but always ask if there's a spare key first. For birthday parties, it's better to let parents handle it unless it's an emergency. What tools do you usually keep around for surprises like that?

Were they trying to make it into some weird party game?

Yeah when Hannah said to keep simple tools handy, that's the real trick. A basic flathead screwdriver and an old gift card can get you out of most indoor lock jams. It stops being a party game when you realize you're just using junk from your pocket. Makes you wonder why they sell those fancy kits when a library card often does the same job.

Right, because nothing says "fun for the whole family" like turning birthday parties into an amateur lockpicking convention. Pretty sure that's how you end up with a bunch of kids trying to bypass their parents' phone screen locks next. Sounds like a fantastic way to get yourself uninvited from every barbecue in town. At least the cat was okay, but imagine explaining to the host that you used their toddler's hair clip to jimmy the door. That's a level of awkward I'm not signing up for.
