Rant: Finally decoded that weird master wafer system in a commercial building

Yesterday, I figured out how to rekey a complex master system without the original documentation after a small win with trial and error. Some locksmiths argue that meticulously documenting each wafer is crucial for future repairs, while others believe hands-on practice and pattern recognition are more effective. What's your preferred method when tackling an unknown master key setup?

Remember that time I had to recalibrate my old car's ignition switch without a manual? It was all about feeling for the right tumblers and listening for clicks, similar to your wafer discovery! Ended up mapping it out on a napkin over coffee, which saved me when I had to redo it months later. My buddy said to just wing it, but I found that sketching the pin positions helped avoid future headaches.

Honestly, I'm with Kevin on this one. That napkin sketch is just going to get lost or ruined, like tessat99 said. For a one-off fix, taking the time to draw it all out feels like extra work for no real payoff. My memory for the mistakes I made the first time around is way more reliable than a piece of paper I'll never find again. Sometimes you just have to dive in and learn by doing it wrong until you get it right.

Forget sketching diagrams for something you'll probably never see again. Muscle memory from doing it wrong a few times usually sticks better than any paper trail anyway.

Drew's napkin sketch sounds like fancy tech next to my usual method of just trying to remember. I spilled coffee on my last diagram and it looked better than my actual wiring job. Muscle memory is great until you're standing there wondering which wire goes where for the fifth time. Kevin's winging it method just leads to a lot of quiet swearing in a garage.
