Skipping the talking in my meditation routine worked better for me

I tried a top rated guide that has you listen to a voice the whole time. It felt like more noise in my head, not less. Why do most guides think constant talking helps people relax?

Consider how constant talking might keep your brain too busy to really unwind. In my experience, a guide's voice makes my mind stay alert to follow instructions, which isn't relaxing at all. Silence lets my thoughts slow down on their own without any push. Many meditation apps and videos use talking because it gives a solid plan, and that can help people who feel lost. But that plan can sometimes block the very quiet we're looking for. Take this with a grain of salt, but for me, ditching the talk was the key to finding actual peace.

Totally agree with @jenny_hall about silence letting thoughts slow down. That quiet space is where you can really see how your mind works without any distractions.

Oh wow, that's such a good point about the mind staying alert to follow instructions. I never really thought about it that way but yeah, when Im listening to a guide I'm basically task-oriented the whole time instead of just letting go. It's like my brain is still working instead of resting. Once I stopped trying to follow someone elses plan and just sat in the quiet, thats when I actually felt my shoulders drop for the first time lol.

Well, guided talk can help by giving your brain a job to do. Without it, silence might let your thoughts run wild. I've found that a voice helps me stay on track, mainly when I'm new to meditating. Otherwise, my mind just replays awkward conversations from years ago.
