Florentine leather craft revealed a durable stitching secret
While in Florence for a vacation, I visited a small leather workshop. The artisan demonstrated a double-stitch technique passed down through generations for high-end furniture. This method loops the thread back for added strength, something I hadn't encountered before. Testing it on a project back home proved its durability under stress. I believe sharing this could benefit others working with leather upholstery.

Consider thread thickness too, @bethc93.

Beth's right about bulk being a concern, but thread thickness really changes the game. I've used thicker threads for double stitching on bags, and it stays flexible if you punch holes properly. The extra loops spread the stress better, so the leather doesn't tear as easy. Plus, with the right thread, double stitch can outlast saddle stitch in high-wear areas. Just my two cents from messing around with leather projects.

Have to disagree a bit here. That double stitch can add bulk and make the leather stiff over time. I've seen saddle stitching hold up better for flexible pieces like bags or jackets. The extra thread loops might weaken the holes in thinner hides.

Try a thinner thread to keep it flexible, that's what worked on my last bag project.
