An old programmer buddy of mine said I was over-relying on black box AI models

I was talking to this guy Mike who's been coding since the 90s. He told me I need to peek under the hood more instead of just trusting the model output. It hit different because he showed me how one simple data normalization fix improved my results by like 30%. Has anyone else had a similar wake up call about leaning too hard on pre-trained models?

saw a talk where a guy said treating AI like a calculator is dangerous cause you forget the math underneath.

Read an article about this recently where teachers were letting kids use ChatGPT for math homework but then the kids couldn't do basic multiplication on their own. Its kind of like GPS right. You use it every day to get around then suddenly your phone dies and you're completely lost in your own town. We're trading understanding for convenience and I wonder if thats really a good trade long term.
