I was shocked to learn how much energy AI training actually uses
I was reading a report from MIT Technology Review last week and found out that training a single large AI model can produce as much carbon emissions as five cars over their whole lifetime. That number really hit me hard. I knew AI took a lot of computing power but I had no idea it was that bad for the environment. I've been using AI tools for work pretty regularly, like for writing drafts and data analysis. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I should cut back or look for greener options. Has anyone else looked into this and found any AI services that use less energy?

Oh man, I had the exact same freakout when I learned about this. What worked for me was just being more mindful about when I actually need the AI, you know? I started running smaller models locally on my own computer for simple stuff like grammar checks or quick drafts, and it feels way better (plus it's free). For the heavy lifting where I really need the big models, I just batch those tasks together instead of making a bunch of separate calls throughout the day. Also, I switched to a provider that publishes their energy use numbers, so at least I know what I'm working with.

Batch the heavy tasks is the real trick, that cuts down wasted calls more than you'd think. And yeah, switching to a provider that's upfront about their energy use at least lets you decide if the cost feels worth it to you.
