Overheard a guy at the coffee shop say AI is just fancy autocomplete

I was waiting for my order this morning and some guy behind me told his friend that all AI does is guess the next word. It got me thinking because he's not entirely wrong at the basic level but it misses the point. Those transformer models from 2017 changed how we handle context way beyond just picking words. My job involves reading a lot of medical notes and seeing how systems can now summarize a whole patient history in seconds is wild compared to five years ago. But I wonder if people underestimate how the training scale actually makes those guesses useful. Has anyone here had to explain to a family member what AI actually does without it sounding like magic?

Ask the guy if he thinks a calculator is just fancy counting and see how fast he backpedals. Because that's basically the same argument, just dressed up in fancier ignorance. The whole "it just guesses the next word" line sounds clever until you realize the scale of what that guessing involves - it's like saying a car just turns the wheels a little bit. What I don't get is why people feel the need to downplay something that clearly works, even if they don't understand the inner mechanics. Would they rather we went back to manually sorting through hundreds of patient charts one by one, or does that somehow not count as real work? Seems like a lazy way to feel smart about not keeping up with the times.

Right, because the guy at the coffee shop is really the one who needs to get his facts straight here. Pretty sure we'll survive even if not everyone gets how transformer math works.

Oh I feel you on this one Felix. "Even if not everyone gets how transformer math works" - that's exactly what I was thinking. I had a buddy try to explain it to me once while we were waiting for our order and I just nodded along like I understood a word he said. Honestly the barista probably has more important things to worry about than whether their knowledge of neural networks is up to snuff. I've seen people get so wrapped up in their own expertise that they forget most folks just want their morning coffee and a decent customer service experience. It's like we've all made it this far without being AI engineers so maybe we'll be okay.
