A climber in Tulsa told me to stop cutting my hinge so thin and it finally clicked
He said leaving the hinge about 10% of the trunk diameter gives you way more control on leaners, and I tried it on a big water oak the next day. Anyone else change up their hinge thickness depending on the species, or do you keep it the same every time?
Learned this same lesson on a totally different thing, but it tracks. I used to tighten every bolt on my truck to the max, thinking tighter equals safer, until an old mechanic told me some bolts need to stretch a little or they just snap. Same idea with the hinge, sounds like. Leave a little give and the whole thing works with you instead of fighting you. It's funny how often the fix is doing less, not more.
