Back when we used paper maps for tree surveys

I remember how we always had big paper maps for checking trees in new areas. Once, my team drove to the wrong street because the map was old and faded. The home owner was so confused when we started looking at his oak instead of the one down the block. Now with phones, we never get lost, but that day was pretty funny once we figured it out. It shows how much simpler things have gotten.

Imagine trying to explain to that homeowner why you were checking out his oak tree...

What would you do if you caught someone staring at your tree? I used to think folks who did that were just nosy, but I get it now. Seeing @nora_park's comment made me realize how common this is. A friend of mine is an arborist, and he told me about checking trees for diseases or weak branches. So now, if I see someone looking at a tree, I figure they might just be trying to help.

Walk up and just ask if they're checking the tree for problems. I've done this before, and most times they're just admirers or maybe a neighbor curious about the species. But once, a guy pointed out a fungus I hadn't noticed, saving me from a big headache later. So now I always give people the benefit of the doubt. It's better to know early if something's wrong, and you might even make a new friend who knows about trees.
