Bad week with a dying red oak in Westport, three bids and no good answer

This week I spent nearly six hours up in a 60 foot red oak that had split at the crotch, dead wood all through the top. The homeowner wanted to save it, but every bid I gave for cabling and pruning came back with them asking for a cheaper way, and I had to explain three times that a removal is the only safe call. By Thursday the wind picked up and a limb came down on their fence, lucky it missed the garage. I took the loss and climbed back up to clean it out, but now I'm wondering how you all handle clients who won't accept a tree's done for. Has anyone found a good way to get through to them without sounding like you're just after the removal money?
