Climbing spikes pressure washers and the old bucket trick

Last week I was cleaning a client's driveway after a big removal in Toledo and realized I used to scrub bark oil stains with a wire brush for 2 hours, now I just bust out the pressure washer and a degreaser. Three years ago my mentor laughed at me for carrying a five gallon bucket of sawdust on every job, but that same bucket just saved a cracked sidewalk from a lawsuit last month. Anyone else got an old timer habit they swore was junk until it paid off?

Funny how the stuff that looks outdated usually has a hidden purpose nobody talks about. That sawdust trick got me thinking, most guys ditch the old methods for the blinky new machines, but they forget the machine can fail mid job. A pressure washer breaking down leaves you stranded, but a bucket and some elbow grease still gets the work done. Not saying we should go back to full manual labor, just that keeping one backup skill in your back pocket changes the whole game when things go sideways. Smart mentors laugh because they already know the lesson, not because they think you're dumb. Seems like the real trick is knowing when the old way beats the new way, no matter how shiny the new one is.
