I finally stopped using a 3:1 pull ratio on every single rigging job

For years I thought more mechanical advantage was always better, especially on big removals in tight spaces. Then last fall in Portland, I was rigging down a big maple limb over a garage and my ground guy yelled up, 'You're fighting the tree!' The limb was coming down way too slow, putting weird stress on the trunk. I realized I was adding friction and complexity when a simple 2:1 or even a direct pull would have let the tree's natural movement do the work. Now I start with less gear and only add it if the tree tells me to. Has anyone else had a rigging setup that felt 'right' but was actually working against you?

Exactly. I've over-rigged like that, fighting the tree just like west.miles said.

Over-rigging is the worst, been there too many times.

What finally made you listen to the ground guy that day?
