Just realized I was cutting my notch cuts all wrong

A local climbing arborist watched me for like 2 minutes at a job in Portland and said my notch was way too shallow. He showed me how going deeper into the hinge side gives way more control on the fall. Has anyone else had to un-learn a basic cut after years of doing it the same way?

Read somewhere that proper notch depth affects like 70% of directional control on the fall.

70% is wild. I've never seen a number that specific for a notch depth. That feels like something someone pulled out of thin air, your mileage may vary for sure.

Does anyone know if there's a specific ratio for hinge thickness too? Tbh I've been eyeballing mine forever and I'm probably way off.
