Honestly, that totally sucks. Cutting your own rope is a brutal move but I bet it beat getting stuck up there all day. Hope you got down safe at least.

That squirrel nest was probably a dreys nest, they build those things crazy strong with oak leaves and twigs. I had a similar thing happen once but my rope got wedged in a branch crotch instead. At 50 feet up you must have been on a rope that was at least 9-10mm thick, right? That's a rough cut through that kind of diameter, especially one-handed while hanging.
