Old foreman said prune oaks only in winter, saved a 40 foot oak in Modesto

My old foreman swore oaks should only be pruned between December and February, and after I ignored that advice one warm April job last year the tree bled sap for three weeks and lost a major limb, so is he just old school or is there real science behind the timing?

Was that tree already stressed from something else, like root damage or heavy rain that spring? Sap flow in oaks is tied to soil moisture and temperature more than the calendar, so a warm wet April can do that even with perfect timing. Did the foreman ever explain the actual reason, or was it just what he always did?
