Overheard a landscaper in Phoenix tell his crew to just 'hack it back' on a stressed palo verde, and honestly, it made me realize how much bad advice gets passed around.
Tbh, it took everything I had not to walk over and explain why that approach would just cause more decay and suckering, so what's the best way you've found to politely correct bad tree care practices you see in public?

Totally thought that was the right way until my arborist friend set me straight!

Watched my neighbor hack at his tree for an hour before someone finally told him he was killing it.

Figured out the hard way that topping trees just makes them grow back weird and weak. It's like the tree panics and sends up a bunch of weak shoots. What was your neighbor even trying to do, make it shorter or clear branches from a power line?
