Remember when we used to climb with just a flip line and spurs?

Back in the early 2000s, my first boss in Atlanta had me scaling pines with a worn-out belt and a handsaw. Now I won't touch a trunk without my full climbing kit and a helmet. The switch came after a buddy took a bad fall in '08 and the whole crew got serious about safety gear. What was the first big safety change you all made on your jobs?

Hearing about @coleman.gray's old crew sharing that lanyard makes me cringe now.

That "worn-out belt" line hits home. My old crew used to share one frayed lanyard between three guys like it was no big deal. We only got proper personal gear after a close call with a cracked D-ring that nobody had checked in months.

It's wild how normalized sketchy gear becomes in some crews. We had a harness with stitching so faded you couldn't even see the color code anymore. Management only replaced the whole lot after an OSHA guy showed up for a random check.
