Snapped a 4 inch limb over the fence on Tuesday and the homeowner handled it better than I did
I was doing a cleanup prune on a big silver maple in Cedar Rapids last Tuesday, working a limb about 12 feet up, and it cracked off earlier than I planned and landed square on the neighbor's fence panel. Nobody got hurt, but it punched two boards loose and I stood there feeling like a total rookie. The homeowner came out before I could even knock, and instead of yelling, he walked the fence line with me and pointed out the one post that was already rotted, said he'd been meaning to replace it since spring anyway. I offered to cover the whole panel, we settled on $85 for boards plus my labor, and he drove me to the lumber yard in his truck while my ground guy kept raking. We had it back up in 40 minutes, and he ended up asking me to quote the two dead ash trees behind his garage. I think the win wasn't really the fence, it was that I knocked on his door with a plan instead of hoping he wouldn't notice. How do you all handle it when a limb lands somewhere it shouldn't, do you carry a fix-it kit or just make the call right then?
