That job in Columbus made me rethink how I sharpen my saws

I got a call from a client last fall after I pruned their big oak. They said the cuts looked ragged and the bark was peeling back in spots. I was defensive at first, thought I was doing fine with my old file. But I went back and looked at the branch collars, and yeah... they were right. The cuts weren't clean because my chain was dull and I was rushing. So I switched to using a guide every single time now and replaced my filing technique. Took me a week to unlearn the bad habits, but now my cuts heal way faster. Has anyone else had a customer call them out like that and end up improving because of it?

Got humbled the same way last year. I quit freehand filing and never looked back.

Grabbed a cheap jig last month after fighting with a freehand setup for years. Ended up spending the same amount on sanding pads as I would have on a decent tool in the first place. Never going back to that mess either.
