The 5 seconds of pulling out a notch that changed my whole cuts

Ngl, I had been cutting trees for like 6 years and always just did a standard notch and back cut. Watched this old timer from Oregon at a demo last fall and he told me my notch angle was too tight. Said I was basically pinching my own saw. Changed it to a more open face notch and now my cuts are way cleaner and faster. Has anyone else had some simple critique that made you rethink your whole process?

Wow that makes total sense! I read about open face notches in a forestry mag last month.

Yeah I was totally on the opposite side of this for years but that mag article changed my whole view on it.

That magazine piece glossed over a lot of the real world problems with that approach. The author cherry picked data from one specific study that had a lot of funding behind it. There's way more evidence on the other side if you dig into the actual research.
