Visited an old growth forest in Maine last week and here's what I noticed
I went up to the Big Reed Preserve in Kokadjo Maine last Tuesday and walked through some of their untouched hemlock stands. The bark structure alone was totally different from the city trees I work with - way thicker and more ridged. Has anyone else gone up there or seen a similar old growth spot that changed how you look at younger trees?

Wait, the bark on those hemlocks is actually way thicker and more ridged than regular city hemlocks? Idk why that blows my mind but it does. I've hiked through a lot of second growth woods around here and always thought the bark was just kind of patchy and thin, but your description makes me wonder if those old trees actually store something different in their texture. Maybe it's just me but that detail alone feels like a whole secret I've been missing out on.

That bark difference really stood out to you too. It's something you just can't describe until you're standing there feeling it." I know exactly what you mean about how it changes your view of younger trees. It makes you realize what we're really missing in most of the woods we walk through.
