A chat with my neighbor in Boise made me rethink my bird feeder placement

He mentioned seeing a Cooper's Hawk use my feeder as a hunting perch last Tuesday, which explains why the finches vanished for a week, so has anyone else had a predator figure out their setup like that?

It reminds me of a time my uncle tried to fix his own sink. He was so sure he knew the problem, but he missed a simple step. The whole thing flooded his kitchen because he overlooked a basic detail. Oh man, that's the universal DIY experience right there! My dad once decided he could re-grout the bathroom tile himself (he absolutely could not). We had to use the neighbor's shower for a week while he figured out where the water shut-off valve was.
